Tommy Becker will present his piece Elective: ART as a live cinema work. Vocals & musical elements performed live to synched video/sound.

Elective: ART is an art rock film that reflects on my twenty year journey as a high school art teacher. Original song writing and spoken word combines with performance art, archival footage and direct 16mm film elements to celebrate the freedom of imagination, autonomy in creativity and necessity of creative practices in our schools. The film depicts an art wizard unlocking a student’s imagination sending them into a surreal world where a color wheel escapes the classroom. Aided by primary colors, a hero’s journey ensues as the class clown is tasked with retrieving the wheel and freeing other students from the tedium of their school day. Hello there.

We love the community that has formed around our little performance series. Part of community is making plenty of time and space for everyone to communicate and exchange ideas, beyond just what goes on on stage. That’s why we leave a lot of time in our events between sets and at the end for people to hang out.

Another part of that space to exchange is, we hope, this new blog. We plan to have this spot be a place for writings and other media about what we do and its context. The local Tucson scene, the regional scene, the state of the arts, ideas and theories and rants and musings about noise, the avant garde, sound, light, and more. This first post is a placeholder. We hope to have more here soon, so keep on checking back….
